Chapter 11

“What? What in tarnation . . .” he looked at her with fear in his eyes. “It can’t be,” he shook his head.

She smiled at him in a way that made Anya feel like she should leave, but she was stuck between the two. They just stared at each other for a moment, then Lud nodded and walked slowly from the room.

Anya sat looking confused. Emory tapped her shoulder, “Alright, I’m sending you to Cassidy Hill, darlin’.” She nodded, “Yep, you need to find the gentry’s manuscript.”

“But I . . .” Anya shook her head.

“Don’t worry, Lud will make sure you know the way.” She touched Anya’s cheek, “It’s my time to go. So, this little town will be vacated soon. Shhh! Just listen.” She placed a finger on Anya’s mouth, “As soon as the Protectorants can get into the town, they will know they are on a timeline.”

“But . . .”

“Nope. Let me finish.” Emory shook her head, “That means you only have a certain number of days to complete your tasks. I don’t know the exact number. Some told me 48 hours, some said longer. Just know that the longer you take, the better chance they have of capturing your sister. Tread carefully, the Narwhal Catcher is taking hold.” She took in a deep breath, “If your sister is captured, all hope is not lost, but you will need to hurry. You will have time to change your fate.” She paused and stared off into space for a few minutes.

Anya wondered if she should speak or not. She was about to open her mouth when Emory looked at her again, “Did all that make sense?”

Anya shook her head, “Not really.”

“I figured.” Emory glanced around, “I’m just getting so many messages, some from spirits I know and some from others I don’t. It’s hard to tell which ones I should trust. I called for you mother, but I’m guessing she’s got something she has to deal with because she hasn’t come ‘round.”

“What do you mean when you say ‘tasks’?” Anya looked at her in confusion.

Emory sighed, “Yeah, I’m not sure. A friend I know well used the word, but now I’m just getting gibberish.” She looked at Anya, “Head to Cassidy Hill. Those were the instructions your mother gave me. Find the bookstore. You will know it when you see it.”

Anya heard Lud’s familiar shuffle and turned to face him. He smiled at her, “You ready?” Anya shook her head ‘no’ and smiled at him as he chuckled.

“Well, ready or not, we all gotta do things in life that we don’t want to.” He winked at her, “I know you will do a great job!”

She turned to look at Emory, whose skin had paled, “Oh, ma’am.”

“I’m alright. Just go.” She wiped sweat from her forehead, “You are running out of time.”

Anya stood up and thanked her. She glanced at Lud, who was already halfway out the front door. She ran to catch up with him. As she peered outside, she could see a frenzy of people running about.
