Chapter 11
âWhat? What in tarnation . . .â he looked at her with fear in his eyes. âIt canât be,â he shook his head.
She smiled at him in a way that made Anya feel like she should leave, but she was stuck between the two. They just stared at each other for a moment, then Lud nodded and walked slowly from the room.
Anya sat looking confused. Emory tapped her shoulder, âAlright, Iâm sending you to Cassidy Hill, darlinâ.â She nodded, âYep, you need to find the gentryâs manuscript.â
âBut I . . .â Anya shook her head.
âDonât worry, Lud will make sure you know the way.â She touched Anyaâs cheek, âItâs my time to go. So, this little town will be vacated soon. Shhh! Just listen.â She placed a finger on Anyaâs mouth, âAs soon as the Protectorants can get into the town, they will know they are on a timeline.â
âBut . . .â
âNope. Let me finish.â Emory shook her head, âThat means you only have a certain number of days to complete your tasks. I donât know the exact number. Some told me 48 hours, some said longer. Just know that the longer you take, the better chance they have of capturing your sister. Tread carefully, the Narwhal Catcher is taking hold.â She took in a deep breath, âIf your sister is captured, all hope is not lost, but you will need to hurry. You will have time to change your fate.â She paused and stared off into space for a few minutes.
Anya wondered if she should speak or not. She was about to open her mouth when Emory looked at her again, âDid all that make sense?â
Anya shook her head, âNot really.â
âI figured.â Emory glanced around, âIâm just getting so many messages, some from spirits I know and some from others I donât. Itâs hard to tell which ones I should trust. I called for you mother, but Iâm guessing sheâs got something she has to deal with because she hasnât come âround.â
âWhat do you mean when you say âtasksâ?â Anya looked at her in confusion.
Emory sighed, âYeah, Iâm not sure. A friend I know well used the word, but now Iâm just getting gibberish.â She looked at Anya, âHead to Cassidy Hill. Those were the instructions your mother gave me. Find the bookstore. You will know it when you see it.â
Anya heard Ludâs familiar shuffle and turned to face him. He smiled at her, âYou ready?â Anya shook her head ânoâ and smiled at him as he chuckled.
âWell, ready or not, we all gotta do things in life that we donât want to.â He winked at her, âI know you will do a great job!â
She turned to look at Emory, whose skin had paled, âOh, maâam.â
âIâm alright. Just go.â She wiped sweat from her forehead, âYou are running out of time.â
Anya stood up and thanked her. She glanced at Lud, who was already halfway out the front door. She ran to catch up with him. As she peered outside, she could see a frenzy of people running about.
